Why didn’t Australia and West Indies travel to Sri Lanka during 1996 World Cup?

Are world cup matches important not to be missed?

Updates:

Sanga, in that case they need not come to India too.

Kanga, other teams did visit Sri Lanka. You mean these two teams were what the Eastern Lion said – cowards?

They suspected prowling ‘tigers’ on the street in the country of ‘lions’!

But for this, it is difficult to say if Lanka would have ultimately conquered the Cup at all! But that’s history and let’s see what happens this time. The Srilankan team today is actually much better balanced and stronger overall and yet they can’t get the favourites tag. So they are unhappy and will fight hard to prove the ‘pundits’ wrong. The two great hurdles for them are going to be India and Australia.

Civil war/unrest…It was considered too dangerous.

LTTE had created a terror atmosphere in Sri Lankia and particularly in Colombo. Both the West Indies and Australia had chosen to forgo their matches to be played in Sri Lanka which cost them a place in the semi-finals.
